To Our Community and Patients,

In our on-going effort to improve patient care, Kona Community and Kohala Hospitals are converting from paper-based record keeping to an electronic medical record (EMR) system.  This system will eventually connect patient information across all facilities within Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC).  We have been carefully planning this transition for over two years, and have selected an EMR system that will improve quality of patient care and increase patient safety.

The advantages to our community are numerous.  Our clinical team will be able to instantly connect to your information such as patient history, lab results, medication lists or allergy information.  It will also provide important best practices and decision support tools at the point of care.

Patients and visitors will play a vital role in our transition.  Computer entry of patient data is new to many of us.  Initially, it may seem that we are focused mainly on our computers, or that we are a little slow with our data entry.  However, we are learning a new method of recording your medical information with a whole new technology.  Our services will not be disrupted and we will still provide the level of care you deserve.

Security of your health records is no less important than before.  Several levels of security have been built into our system.  Only authorized users will be given access to EMR, and the level of their access will be consistent with their role in your care.  Additionally, HHSC is utilizing a state-of-the art data center that will securely house all patient data.

The transition to electronic medical records has been a long journey for us.  We are excited to take the next step in enhancing patient care.  We appreciate your patience and support during this transition.
